Dr. Stephen Axon is a Lecturer in Sustainability at Bournemouth University's Department of Life and Environmental Sciences. He holds a PhD in Geography from the University of Liverpool (2015) and a BSc in Geography with Environmental Management from Liverpool Hope University (2009). His research focuses on the socio-cultural dimensions of sustainability, including public engagement with sustainable communities, climate justice, and energy transitions. He employs mixed-methods approaches such as surveys, focus groups, and policy analysis to evaluate interventions that foster equitable and participatory sustainable lifestyles.
Key research areas include: (1) behavioral changes for sustainable practices during disruptive events like the pandemic; (2) energy justice and policy implications for vulnerable communities; and (3) governance frameworks for offshore renewable energy. His work intersects environmental psychology, human geography, and sustainability science, with a focus on advancing both theoretical understanding and practical policy solutions.
Axon is actively involved in interdisciplinary collaborations, particularly with the Blue Economy and coastal sustainability initiatives. He leads units such as 'Environmental Law and Social Justice' and 'Frontiers of Sustainability Science.' His recent publications explore food systems transformation, climate policy analysis, and the socio-political dynamics of environmental activism.
Teaching Responsibilities: Unit leader for Environmental Law and Social Justice (PG), Frontiers of Sustainability Science (PG), and Environmental and Societal Challenges (UG). He also oversees residential field trips and contemporary topics in geography.
