معرفی
Professor Stephen Alexander is a faculty member in the Department of Paediatrics & Child Health at the University of Sydney's Faculty of Medicine and Health. His primary affiliation is with the Children's Hospital, Westmead. His research focuses on kidney diseases, transplantation, and immune tolerance mechanisms. He leads studies on renal ischemia/reperfusion injury, chronic kidney disease (CKD), and the development of gene therapies for genetic kidney disorders. His work spans translational research, genetics, and animal models to address clinical challenges in paediatric nephrology.
Research interests include the interplay between immunology and kidney function, particularly in transplantation tolerance, renal inflammation, and genetic drivers of kidney disease. He has pioneered studies on regulatory T cells, macrophage modulation, and cytokine-based therapies to mitigate kidney injury.
His recent publications highlight advancements in understanding gasdermin D's role in renal protection, caregiver perspectives on CKD care, and genomic testing for undiagnosed kidney failure. He collaborates widely across Australia and internationally, contributing to clinical trials like NAVKIDS2 to improve pediatric CKD management.
Professor Alexander advises three PhD/Master's students and has mentored numerous early-career researchers. His lab integrates basic science with clinical trials, aiming to translate discoveries into therapies for conditions like nephrotic syndrome and allograft rejection.
