Hugh McCarthy is a Senior Lecturer in Paediatrics and Child Health at the University of Sydney's Children's Hospital at Westmead Clinical School, and a Staff Specialist in Paediatric Nephrology at the Sydney Children's Hospital Network. He holds advanced clinical qualifications: BSc, MBBS, MRCPCH, PhD, and FRACP. His research focuses on the genomic determinants of kidney disease, proteomics of podocytopathies, and rare disease registries. He co-founded the KIDGEN initiative, a national collaborative studying genetic kidney disease, and designed Australia's first renal gene panel service, benefiting over 800 patients.
He is involved in clinical leadership, including the NSW/ACT paediatric renal genetic service, and grant-funded trials such as the OPEN study (MRFF) and the NAVKIDS2 trial (Nacuity-sponsored). As MD Program Year 3 Research Project Coordinator, he bridges education and clinical innovation. Professional affiliations include the Australian and New Zealand Paediatric Nephrology Association, the International Society of Nephrology, and the Alport Foundation of Australia (Board member).
Hugh’s research combines clinical practice with molecular insights, emphasizing patient advocacy and translational medicine. His work spans genetic diagnostics, drug efficacy in transplanted kidneys, and improving healthcare access for children with CKD. Collaborations include the University of Bristol’s Academic Renal Unit on gene discovery and lab-based studies.
