Stephen Aaron Goutman

Stephen Aaron Goutman, MD, is an Associate Professor in the Department of Neurology at the University of Michigan Medical School and Director of the ALS Clinic and ALS Center of Excellence at Michigan Medicine. He specializes in neuromuscular diseases, with a focus on amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).

Dr. Goutman's research centers on identifying environmental risk factors and potential treatments for ALS, including the groundbreaking discovery of a link between ALS and organochlorine pesticides. He leads NIH- and CDC-funded studies and oversees the University of Michigan ALS Biorepository, supporting genetic, epigenetic, and immunology research.

His recent work includes multisite clinical trials through the Northeast ALS Consortium (NEALS) and advocacy for mandatory ALS reporting in Michigan to enhance data collection and prevention efforts.
