Stephen A. Maisto is a Research Professor and Professor Emeritus of Psychology at Syracuse University's College of Arts and Sciences. He holds dual licenses in clinical psychology in New York and Rhode Island, and is a Diplomate in Clinical Psychology from the American Board of Professional Psychology. His research focuses on substance use disorders, HIV prevention, and behavioral healthcare integration. He has authored over 300 publications and secured $50M+ in research funding, including NIH grants. Notable roles include serving as A&S’ Associate Dean of Research (2023–present) and Director of Research at the VA Center for Integrated Health Care. His work bridges clinical practice and science, emphasizing evidence-based interventions.
Education: Ph.D. in Experimental Psychology, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee; Postdoctoral Respecialization in Clinical Psychology, Vanderbilt University.
Research Interests: Alcohol/drug use treatment, risk perception mechanisms, HIV intervention in psychiatric populations, and primary care integration of behavioral healthcare. His studies include groundbreaking work on alcohol's impact on sexual risk-taking and pain-alcohol interrelations.
