Emily L. Zale is an Assistant Professor of Psychology at Binghamton University, specializing in health psychology and behavioral medicine. Her research focuses on the interrelations between substance use, pain, and psychopathology, with an emphasis on developing translational interventions for comorbid conditions. She holds a PhD from Syracuse University, an MS from Texas A&M University, and a BA from the University of Rochester.
Research Interests: Zale’s work integrates interdisciplinary approaches to study mechanisms linking pain and substance use, including laboratory pain models, clinical population surveys, and intervention development. Key areas include nicotine/tobacco, alcohol, and prescription opioid use in chronic pain contexts, as well as psychopathology and transdiagnostic constructs.
Awards:
- National Research Service Award (NIH/NIDA, 2015-2017)
Advising & Grants: Zale’s lab, the Substance Use, Pain, and Health Research Lab (SPHRL), explores clinical and translational research. Her interventions target integrated healthcare models for substance use and pain management. Ongoing projects include randomized controlled trials for mind-body interventions in neurofibromatosis and geographically diverse populations.
Labs/Teams: The SPHRL (https://sites.google.com/binghamton.edu/zale-lab/home) coordinates multidisciplinary efforts to advance pain-substance use research and intervention strategies.
