Professor Stephanie Wynne-Jones is Deputy Head of the Department of Archaeology at the University of York and holds the title of Professor of African Archaeology. Her research focuses on East African urbanism, material culture, and community archaeology, with a particular emphasis on Swahili coastal sites like Songo Mnara and Kilwa Kisiwani. She directs projects such as the Urban Ecology and Transitions in the Zanzibar Archipelago (UETZAP), funded by the Leverhulme Trust, which explores resource use in early towns. She also leads the Tanzanian component of the MAEASaM project, documenting endangered heritage sites.
Her academic roles include University Research Champion for Culture and Communication, Director of Partnerships in her department, and collaborations with institutions like Aarhus University’s Centre for Urban Network Evolutions (UrbNet) and the British Institute in Eastern Africa. She supervises PhD students in topics ranging from Swahili ceramics to heritage conservation in Algeria.
Research interests span material culture analysis, urban spatial practices, and the intersection of archaeology with modern communities. Recent work includes geochemical and biomolecular studies at sites like Unguja Ukuu and Songo Mnara, aiming to reconstruct environmental and social dynamics. Publications highlight themes of cultural heritage, precolonial trade networks, and interdisciplinary archaeological methods.
