Matthew Pawlowicz is a Teaching Associate Professor in the Department of Anthropology at Virginia Commonwealth University. He holds a Ph.D. in Anthropology from the University of Virginia (2011), an M.A. from the same institution (2007), and a B.A. from Yale University (2004). His archaeological research focuses on eastern and southern Africa, combining interdisciplinary approaches to study historical human migration patterns and Swahili coastal settlements.
Research interests center on African archaeology, where he investigates migration histories in central Zambia using archaeological and linguistic methods, and documents Swahili sites like Gede and Songo Mnara. His work spans environmental archaeology, cultural movement analysis, and precolonial African societies.
