Stephanie Mawson is a Lecturer in Early Modern History at the University of York's Department of History. She holds a PhD from the University of Cambridge and previously held fellowships at the Instituto de Ciencias Sociais (Lisbon) and St. John's College (Cambridge). Her research explores Indigenous agency and resistance in colonial Southeast Asia, focusing on Spanish imperial limitations.

Her book, 'Incomplete Conquests: The Limits of Spanish Empire in the Seventeenth-Century Philippines' (2023), challenges narratives of imperial dominance by highlighting histories of resistance and evasion. Current projects investigate Indigenous tributary networks in the Spice Islands, emphasizing Asian trade and political power over European hegemony.
Her publications analyze themes like folk magic, slavery, and convict labor in colonial contexts, often using interdisciplinary methods. She received the Title A Research Fellowship in 2018.
Teaching includes undergraduate modules on empire, frontiers, and early modern Asia-Pacific, such as 'Confronting Empire' and 'The Margins of Empire'.
