David Veevers

Dr. David Veevers is a Lecturer in Early Modern History at the University of Bangor, affiliated with the School of History, Law, and Social Sciences. He holds a PhD from the University of Kent, where he also completed his MA and undergraduate studies. His research focuses on the early modern British Empire, particularly the English East India Company's role in South Asia and global colonial dynamics.

David has held prestigious positions, including a Postdoctoral Associate at the Leverhulme Trust-funded project on global determinants of the English Constitution (2015-2020) and a Leverhulme Early Career Fellowship at Queen Mary, University of London (2018-2022). His current research emphasizes Indigenous and non-European responses to British imperial expansion, highlighted in his forthcoming book The Great Defiance: How the World Took on the British Empire (Penguin, 2023).

Teaching includes courses on seventeenth-century England, global history, and early modern Asia. Awards include the Royal Historical Society's Alexander Prize (2014) and the Royal Society of Literature's Giles St Aubyn Award (2021). His work explores cross-cultural links, diplomatic relationships, and colonial networks, with recent projects examining Indigenous enslavement in Caribbean colonies (2024-2026).
