Dr. Karolina Hutkova is an LSE Fellow in the Department of Economic History at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). Her research focuses on global economic relations, particularly the transfer of silk technologies between Europe and Asia during the early modern and 19th centuries. She holds a PhD from the University of Warwick and has held prestigious fellowships, including the Economic History Society Postdoctoral Fellowship and Early Career Fellowship at the University of Warwick. Her work examines how institutions and political economies influenced entrepreneurship and business activities, with a specific focus on the English East India Company's silk enterprise in Bengal.
Her key publications include analyses of technology transfer failures, the organization of colonial manufacturing, and the impact of laissez-faire policies on the Bengal silk industry. Dr. Hutkova teaches courses such as 'Premodern Paths of Growth: East and West Compared' and 'The Development and Integration of the World Economy in the 19th and 20th Centuries.' She has contributed to international conferences and workshops, including the World Economic History Congress and the ENIUGH Congress in Paris.
