Stephanie Matt, PhD, is a Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Pharmacology & Physiology at Drexel University College of Medicine. She holds a PhD in Neuroscience from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (2018) and a BS in Psychology and Neuroscience from the University of Delaware (2013). Her research investigates the interplay between depression, antidepressants, HIV pathogenesis, and myeloid cell biology, with a focus on neuroimmune mechanisms in aging and chronic inflammation.
Her research interests include HIV neuropathogenesis, myeloid biology, neuroimmunology, psychiatric disease, antidepressant pharmacology, and epigenetic regulation. Key projects explore how antidepressants and antiretroviral therapies influence HIV reservoirs and inflammation in myeloid cells, leveraging in vitro models like primary macrophages and iPSC-derived microglia.
Dr. Matt has received notable awards including the NIMH Mentored Research Scientist Career Development Award (2023), ASPET Postdoctoral Poster Presentation (2023), and multiple travel/fellowship grants from neuroimmune societies. Her work bridges neurotransmitter signaling, immune function, and HIV/AIDS research to address treatment-resistant depression and age-related comorbidities.
Her research also examines epigenetic mechanisms in aging, including how butyrate and dietary fiber modulate neuroinflammation. Collaborations with the Gaskill Lab focus on translational studies to mitigate neuroHIV and improve therapeutic strategies for aging populations.
