Stephanie Hassell is an Assistant Professor in the Department of History at Clemson University's College of Arts and Humanities. She specializes in African history, focusing on the intersection of slavery, religion, and empire in the Indian Ocean world. Her research is supported by the Social Science Research Council.
- PhD in History from Stanford University (2014)
Her work examines Portuguese colonialism in India, particularly slavery and religious conversion dynamics between 1500-1700. Key research areas include religious identity formation among enslaved populations, imperial security strategies, and the role of the Inquisition in colonial governance. She teaches courses on African history, slavery, and Indian Ocean studies.
Recent publications include her upcoming monograph Slavery and Religious Conversion in Portugal’s Indian Empire (2025) and articles in Journal of Early Modern History and History in Africa. Her presentations address topics like African experiences of slavery in Portuguese India and labor mobility in the Indian Ocean.
