Jane Hooper is Professor of History at George Mason University, specializing in global history and Indian Ocean studies with PhD from Emory University. She currently co-directs an NEH-funded project developing the first comprehensive database of Indian Ocean slave voyages.
Hooper's research examines Madagascar's role in global trade networks, slavery in the Indian Ocean world, and American commercial expansion. Her books include Feeding Globalization on Madagascar's provisioning trade and Yankees in the Indian Ocean analyzing American maritime activity.
Current investigations focus on enslaved experiences in the Seychelles during emancipation, building on extensive archival work in the region. Hooper's fellowships include the Verney Fellowship at Nantucket Historical Association for whaling history research.
Her teaching encompasses global history, African history, Indian Ocean studies, and slavery's transformations. Hooper has presented research on colonial Mauritius, piracy, and trade at major conferences including the African Studies Association.
