Christian Pinnen is a Professor of History at Mississippi College, where he has taught since 2012. Starting Fall 2022, he co-directs the African American Studies program and teaches core courses including U.S. surveys, African American History, Colonial U.S. History, the American Revolution, the Old South, and Latin American History.
His research centers on African American history and colonial-era slavery dynamics, with specialized focus on the Mississippi Borderlands and Atlantic World. Pinnen examines how race, empire, and slavery intersected in multi-ethnic border regions, particularly through the lens of the Natchez District. His work reveals how enslaved people navigated imperial transitions between European powers while shaping regional social structures.
His scholarly output includes the award-winning book Complexion of Empire in Natchez and the article "Slavery and Empire" (2017), which collectively analyze slavery's evolution under competing imperial regimes. These works demonstrate consistent thematic emphasis on racial hierarchy formation, enslaved agency, and borderland cultural synthesis.
Scientific Awards:
- Book of the Year, Mississippi Historical Society, 2022 (for Complexion of Empire in Natchez: Race and Slavery in the Mississippi Borderlands)
Pinnen actively engages public scholarship as a Mississippi Humanities Council Speakers Bureau member, delivering talks on Colonial Natchez slavery and Mississippi's colonial history.
