Stephanie Hannam-Swain is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Sheffield, affiliated with both the Sheffield Institute of Education and the Health Research Institute. She holds a BSc, MSc, and is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA). As Course Lead for the BA (Hons) Education with Autism, Disability and SEN, she focuses on inclusive education and disability studies. Her doctoral research explores disabled peoples' conceptualizations and experiences of self-harm, and she leads the Disability Research Forum to support early-career researchers.
Dr. Hannam-Swain's research interests center on disability studies, self-harm, and societal exclusion, with a particular emphasis on intersectional experiences. Her work bridges academic theory and practical advocacy, including initiatives to improve institutional accessibility at the University of Sheffield. She has co-authored studies on mental health disparities in ethnic minority populations and the impact of pandemics on disabled academics' work practices.
Her teaching spans undergraduate and postgraduate programs in education, psychology, and special educational needs. She previously co-chaired the Disabled Staff Network and contributed to institutional accessibility reforms. Beyond academia, she serves as a Trustee of Disability Sheffield.
