Dr. Stephanie DiPietro is an Associate Professor and Director of Graduate Studies in the Department of Sociology and Criminology at the University of Iowa. She holds a PhD in Criminology and Criminal Justice from the University of Maryland, College Park, and an MA in Sociology from George Washington University. Her research focuses on life course criminology, criminal desistance, and adaptation among immigrant/refugee populations, particularly examining violence and delinquency patterns. Notably, she conducted an ethnographic study on Bosnian refugees affected by the 1992-1995 war, analyzing trauma's impact on behavioral trajectories and family/community dynamics.
Dr. DiPietro has received prestigious awards including the W.E.B. Du Bois Fellowship (2011) and a J. William Fulbright Award (2013-2014). Her work appears in top journals like Criminology, Social Forces, and Journal of Research on Crime and Delinquency. She advises graduate students in criminology and sociology, and her research emphasizes resilience mechanisms in post-crisis societies.
