Dr. Stephanie Atkinson is a Professor in Pediatrics at McMaster University, affiliated with the Medical Sciences Graduate Program and McMaster Children's Hospital. Her research focuses on compromised statural growth in premature infants, skeletal development in pediatric diseases, and the interplay of nutrition, genetics, and environmental factors in health outcomes. She leads international clinical trials, including a pregnancy intervention study harmonized with China, India, and South Africa.
Her professional service includes roles on the Governing Council of CIHR, President of the American Society for Nutrition, and leadership in boards such as the Canadian Child Health Clinician Scientists Program (CCHCSP). She has trained over 50 graduate students and 12 post-doctoral fellows.
Key research areas include maternal/fetal health, neonatal nutrition, bone metabolism, and the developmental origins of non-communicable diseases. Her recent studies explore diet-exercise interventions during pregnancy, metabolism in children with chronic illnesses, and biomarkers of bone fragility in pediatric leukemia patients.
Honors include a Doctorate honoris causa from Western University, election to the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences, and the Danone Institute Leadership Award. She has published over 300 articles and holds grants from CIHR and NIH.
