Dr Stephanie Alder is an Early Career Research Fellow at the Institute of English Studies (School of Advanced Study, University of London). Her research focuses on literary censorship in Victorian literature, with expertise in authors like Geraldine Jewsbury, George Eliot, Thomas Hardy, and Ouida. She holds a PhD from the Universities of Exeter and Reading. Current projects include publishing her doctoral thesis as a book and investigating Mudie’s Select Library’s global influence (1842–1937).
Research interests span Victorian literature, moral censorship dynamics, and the intersection of literature with education and cultural history. She has published in Thomas Hardy Society Journals, Victorian Periodicals Review, and The Conversation, and edited the Thomas Hardy Society journals. Her work bridges literary analysis with historical context, emphasizing the societal impacts of literary institutions.
Publications reflect themes of censorship, moral regulation in literature, and the role of subscription libraries in cultural dissemination. She actively contributes to academic discourse through journals and public platforms, combining rigorous scholarship with accessibility.
