Dr. Harry George Daniels is a Stipendiary Lecturer in English at the University of Oxford, teaching at Jesus College and other colleges. He holds a DPhil from Oxford as a Wolfson Postgraduate Scholar in the Humanities. His research explores Victorian conceptions of art’s moral and spiritual value, focusing on figures like Ruskin, Eliot, Hardy, and Gosse. He is the Secretary of the Ruskin Society and hosts its podcast Ruskin Matters.
Research interests include aesthetic education, irony in Victorian literature, and intersections between literature, psychoanalysis, and philosophy. Publications include articles in Modern Philology (forthcoming), The Henry James Review, and The Journal of the Sylvia Townsend Warner Society (winner of the Mary Jacobs Prize).
Teaching emphasizes close reading, critical theory, and interdisciplinary approaches. He has mentored students across colleges, fostering analytical rigor and intellectual curiosity. His pedagogy bridges textual analysis with broader philosophical and historical frameworks.
