Joseph Hankinson is a Stipendiary Lecturer at The Queen's College, University of Oxford, within the Faculty of English Language & Literature. He holds a DPhil from Balliol College (2020), supervised by Professor Matthew Reynolds. His research focuses on the interrelation of nationalism, belonging, foreignness, and stylistic innovation, with a particular emphasis on 19th- and 20th-century literature. His work develops innovative comparative methodologies, notably through a forthcoming monograph juxtaposing Victorian poet Robert Browning and contemporary Ghanaian writer Kojo Laing.
Research interests include cross-temporal and cross-cultural literary connections, postcolonial discourse, and the role of translation in mediating national and religious identities. His scholarship bridges Victorian studies, postcolonial literature, and methodological innovation in comparative literature. Notable publications include analyses of Kojo Laing’s poetics, Robert Browning’s engagement with religion and politics, and the theoretical underpinnings of affiliative literary frameworks.
Teaching focuses on British and comparative literature, with an emphasis on 19th-century texts and postcolonial reimaginings of classical forms. His work consistently emphasizes the fluidity of cultural boundaries and the productive tensions between historical and contemporary literary traditions.
