Stephan Stetter is Professor of International Politics and Conflict Research at the Institute of Political Science, Faculty of Political and Social Sciences, Bundeswehr University Munich, where he has taught since 2008. He is also a Visiting Professor at the University of Bologna for the academic year 2024/25.
Stetter's academic journey includes doctoral studies at the London School of Economics and Political Science (2004), preceded by studies at Heidelberg University and Hebrew University Jerusalem. His career progressed from research assistant at Bielefeld University (2003-2006) to acting professor (2007-2008), culminating in his current professorship at Bundeswehr University since 2008.
His research centers on three interconnected domains: theoretical frameworks for understanding international politics in global modernity (with historical-sociological perspective), Middle Eastern politics and conflicts (specializing in Israel-Palestine dynamics), and EU foreign policy. His scholarly approach bridges theoretical innovation with empirical investigation of specific regional contexts.
Stetter's recent publications reveal evolving research trajectories toward digital dimensions of peacebuilding, energy geopolitics in the Eastern Mediterranean, and historical continuities in contemporary international politics. His work demonstrates consistent engagement with how global political structures interact with regional and local contexts, particularly in the Middle East.
