Jan Busse

Dr. Jan Busse is a Senior Research Fellow and research associate at the Chair of International Politics and Conflict Research at Bundeswehr University Munich. He holds a master's degree in Global Politics from the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) and a bachelor's degree in Political Science from Bielefeld University.

Jan Busse specializes in historical and international political sociology in international relations, with particular emphasis on Foucauldian poststructuralism and (de)constructivist theories of global order formation. His regional expertise centers on political and social dynamics in the Middle East and North Africa, especially Israel and Palestine, as well as European and German foreign policy in the Middle East. His work explores the historical and social foundations of political order, the Israeli-Arab conflict, the interplay between borders and political order, football politics in the MENA region, and EU conflict governance.

His publications demonstrate a consistent focus on governmentality studies and Middle Eastern politics, with his book 'Der Nahostkonflikt' establishing itself as a standard reference work now in its 12th edition. Busse's research bridges theoretical frameworks with regional expertise, examining how power structures shape political order in global contexts, particularly in Palestine and the broader Middle East.

Busse has served as co-director of the Israeli European Policy Network (2014-2020) and as a member of the Arab German Young Academy of Sciences and Humanities (2017-2022). He is set to serve as managing editor of the Zeitschrift für Internationale Beziehungen (Journal of International Relations) from 2025-2027 alongside Prof. Dr. Bernhard Stahl.
