Dr. Stephan Petzold is Associate Professor in German History at the School of Languages, Cultures and Societies, University of Leeds, where he has been teaching since 2013. He previously taught in the School of History at Leeds (2011–2013) and at Aberystwyth University (2011–2012). His academic work bridges history, politics, and cultural studies, with a strong focus on 20th-century German history and memory culture.
His research centers on key debates in post-war German society, particularly the 'Fischer controversy' and its societal impact during the 1950s–1970s. He investigates how historical memory evolved in West Germany, especially regarding the two World Wars and the Nazi past, examining cultural representations in films, youth magazines, and public discourse. His interests extend to GDR dissent, popular culture in East Germany, and contemporary German politics and music.
Stephan Petzold is actively involved in teaching and academic leadership, currently serving as Interim Director of Film Studies. He teaches modules on 20th-century German history, memory cultures, and contributes to interdisciplinary courses in world histories, Black Europe, and film studies.
His scholarly recognition includes the British International History Group Thesis Prize in 2012 for his PhD on the origins of the First World War. He is a member of several professional associations, including the German History Society and the German Studies Association.
He has supervised postgraduate research and welcomes PhD applicants interested in German history, memory studies, and cultural politics. His academic affiliations and teaching reflect a strong commitment to interdisciplinary and critical approaches in the humanities.
