Stephan Habscheid is Professor of German Studies/Applied Linguistics at the University of Siegen, where he holds a position in the Faculty of Philosophy. He serves as subproject manager for B06 and MGK within the university's research framework. His institutional affiliation includes membership in the Collaborative Research Center 1187 "Media of Cooperation" since 2020 and the Collaborative Research Centre 1472 "Transformations of the Popular" since 2021.
Habscheid completed his academic formation with a Master's degree in German and History at the University of Trier (1991-1994), followed by doctoral studies resulting in a doctorate in Early German Philology from the same institution in 1995. His habilitation in German linguistics was completed at Chemnitz University of Technology in 2002.
Habscheid's research spans multiple interconnected domains within linguistic studies, with particular emphasis on language in institutional contexts and organizational settings. His work explores the intricate relationships between language, power, and social structure in professional environments, examining how linguistic practices shape and are shaped by organizational culture. A significant portion of his scholarship focuses on media linguistics, investigating how communication technologies transform interactional patterns and social relationships. His interest in small talk and conversation represents a longstanding commitment to understanding the micro-dynamics of everyday interaction, particularly examining theater interval conversations as windows into broader social phenomena. Recent work has increasingly addressed digital communication, with substantial contributions to understanding voice assistant technologies and their integration into domestic spaces.
An analysis of Habscheid's recent publications reveals a clear trajectory toward the intersection of linguistic theory and digital technology, particularly examining how voice-controlled interfaces are incorporated into domestic life. His work demonstrates consistent engagement with methodological innovation in discourse analysis while maintaining theoretical connections to sociopragmatics and media linguistics. The publications show increasing interdisciplinary collaboration, particularly with computer scientists and social researchers studying technology adoption.
- Award of the Friends of the University of Trier (1996)
Habscheid has supervised numerous doctoral candidates whose dissertations explore diverse aspects of linguistic practice, including organizational communication, digital media discourse, and theatrical interaction. His mentorship has extended to projects funded by significant third-party sources including the German Research Foundation (DFG), particularly through Research Training Group 1769 "Locating Media" (2011-2022). His collaborative projects include the DFG-funded "Theater in Conversation" (2014-2016) and the "digGer – Open Education in German Studies" project funded by the Ministry of Culture and Science of North Rhine-Westphalia. He currently co-leads two major collaborative research projects: B06 "Un/requested Observation in Interaction" within CRC 1187 and "'One of Us' - Discursive Constructions, Media of Participation, and Linguistic Practices of Mayoral Communication" within CRC 1472.
Habscheid's scholarly infrastructure includes his role as co-editor of the "Zeitschrift für Literaturwissenschaft und Linguistik" (LiLi) since 2012 and co-editor of the book series "Studien zu Literaturwissenschaft und Linguistik" since 2021.
