Sten Hagberg is a Professor of Cultural Anthropology at Uppsala University's Department of Cultural Anthropology and Ethnology. He has conducted long-term ethnographic research in Burkina Faso since 1988 and Mali since 2008, focusing on themes like dispute resolution, local politics, democracy, and security. As Director of Uppsala University's Forum for Africa Studies since 2017, he leads interdisciplinary research on Africa. Hagberg is also an Associate Senior Fellow at the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (since 2016).
His research emphasizes methodological developments, including fieldwork in insecure terrains and team research epistemology. Recent projects include 'Citizen Perspectives on Societal Challenges in Mali' and 'Decolonizing Research Methodologies' with international partners. He supervises PhD students and leads programs training researchers from institutions like Eduardo Mondlane University in Mozambique.
Hagberg edits krитisk etnografi: Swedish Journal of Anthropology and founded the transnational research initiative LACET (Laboratoire d'Anthropologie Comparative, Engagée et Transnationale). He holds leadership roles in academic societies like the Swedish Society for Anthropology and Geography (2013–2017) and the Mande Studies Association (2020–2023).
Key publications include analyses of Sahel security dynamics, citizen mobilization, and decolonial methodologies. His work bridges ethnographic practice with public engagement, advocating for open-access scholarship and anthropological contributions to societal debates.
