Stelios Michalopoulos is the Eastman Professor of Political Economy at Brown University, affiliated with the Center for Philosophy, Politics, and Economics. He is also a Research Associate at the NBER and a Research Fellow at the CEPR. His research focuses on political economy, cultural dynamics, economic growth, and comparative development, particularly in Africa.
Education: B.A. and MSc from Athens University of Economics and Business, Ph.D. in Economics from Brown University (2008). Previous roles include Assistant Professor at Tufts University, visiting positions at Harvard Business School, INSEAD, and the Minneapolis Federal Reserve Bank.
Research emphasizes historical legacies, ethnic institutions, and their impact on modern economic outcomes. Key themes include African development, forced displacement effects, and the role of religion in education. His work bridges quantitative economics with ethnographic and historical data.
Recipient of the 2015 Excellence Award in Global Economic Affairs and the prestigious 2019 Bodossaki Prize for Social Sciences. Research has been funded by NSF and DFID. His 2020s work explores AI-driven cultural analysis and intergenerational mobility in Africa.
