David Lagakos is a Professor of Economics at Boston University and a Research Associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER). He holds affiliations with institutions such as the Centre for Economic Policy Research (CEPR), the International Growth Centre (Ghana), and BREAD. His research focuses on macroeconomics and development economics, particularly sectoral productivity, structural transformation, and labor market outcomes. Lagakos has served as an editor for the Review of Economic Dynamics and co-editor of the Journal of Development Economics. He received his PhD from UCLA (2008) and BA from the University of Rochester (2001).
Research interests include the role of technology in tax capacity, agricultural productivity gaps, climate policy impacts, and the macroeconomic effects of educational policies. Recent work examines rural electrification's role in migration and structural transformation in Ethiopia, as well as urban-rural wage dynamics in Africa. His work frequently integrates policy-relevant analysis, such as studies on pandemic responses in developing economies.
Lagakos has held prior faculty positions at UC San Diego (with tenure), Arizona State University, and the Federal Reserve Banks of Minneapolis and New York. He is currently on sabbatical at Harvard University (Spring 2025).
