Stein Monteiro

Stein Monteiro is a Research Affiliate at the Canada Excellence Research Chair (CERC) in Migration and Integration at Toronto Metropolitan University and the Lead Research Associate in the Immigration Knowledge Area for The Conference Board of Canada. Previously, from fall 2019 to spring 2024, he served as a Senior Research Associate with CERC Migration.

Monteiro's research focuses on the economics of immigration, cultural assimilation of new immigrants, and immigration and multiculturalism policy. He investigates causal relationships between socio-structural characteristics of host and sending countries on migration decisions and assimilation. His work also explores family dynamics in migration, co-ethnic networks, and the role of social networks in immigrant integration.

His recent publications (2020-2024) cover diverse aspects of migration, including the impact of social media on settlement, economic assimilation, pandemic-related immigration policy, and credential recognition. The research spans quantitative and qualitative methods, often using administrative and survey data, and addresses both Canadian and international contexts.

Monteiro has been involved in research projects with the International Growth Center (London School of Economics) and utilizes Statistics Canada’s Research Data Centre. His professional experience also includes roles in higher education administration at the Ministry of Advanced Education and Skills Training and Humber College.

He is an active member of the CERC in Migration and Integration research team and maintains professional connections through The Conference Board of Canada.
