Steffen Schneider is a Professor of Romance Literature and Cultural Studies at the University of Graz, affiliated with the Institute of Romance Studies. He holds a Dr.phil. from the University of Tübingen (2003) and completed his habilitation there in 2011. His academic trajectory includes research positions at Tübingen (2004–2014), a DFG-funded fellowship at the European Institute of Intellectual Studies in Rome (2009–2010), and a visiting professorship at the University of Trier (2014–2017) before joining Graz in 2016.
His research explores interdisciplinary intersections of literature, philosophy, and cultural history, with foci on Renaissance intellectual traditions, aesthetic theory, and the mediation of spiritual concepts in early modern European arts. Key themes include archival methodologies, cosmological discourse, and the reception of classical thought in Romance literatures.
Schneider's scholarly contributions reflect sustained engagement with German and Romance philology, emphasizing transnational intellectual networks. His work has been recognized with the Elise Richter Prize (2013) for outstanding research in Romance studies.
