Luc Deitz is an Extraordinary Professor for Medieval and Renaissance Latin at the University of Trier since 2009, while simultaneously serving as Curator of manuscripts and rare books at the Bibliothèque nationale du Luxembourg since 1998. He previously held positions as Associate Professor of Classical Letters at the University of Luxembourg (2010-2017) and as Privatdozent at the University of Trier (2002-2008).
Deitz received his education in classics and philosophy at the universities of Luxembourg, Paris, and Tübingen. His academic career began with a four-year position as an assistant in Latin philology to Manfred Fuhrmann at the University of Konstanz, followed by five years as a Research Fellow at the Warburg Institute in London.
Professor Deitz's research focuses on the intellectual landscape of the Renaissance and early modern period, with particular expertise in Neo-Latin studies. His work bridges classical philology, intellectual history, and manuscript studies, examining how ancient texts were received, interpreted, and transformed during the Renaissance. Platonism in the Renaissance represents a core thread in his scholarship, alongside his extensive work on editing Neo-Latin texts and analyzing poetics and rhetoric in the Renaissance. His research also delves deeply into the history of scholarship from 1500-1750, exploring how scholarly practices evolved during this transformative period.
Analysis of Deitz's publication record reveals a consistent focus on Renaissance intellectual history with particular attention to Neo-Latin literature and the reception of classical texts. His work frequently examines the intersection of philosophy, rhetoric, and literary theory in the early modern period, with Francesco Patrizi da Cherso emerging as a recurring subject of study. Deitz demonstrates remarkable methodological versatility, moving seamlessly between textual criticism, intellectual history, and manuscript studies to illuminate the complex scholarly networks of Renaissance Europe.
Deitz has received numerous prestigious honors and awards throughout his career:
- Chevalier de l'Ordre de la Couronne de chêne du Luxembourg (2022)
- Elected to editorial board of Renaissance Quarterly (2019)
