Melanie Schneider's research focuses on French-language literature of the 20th and 21st centuries, with particular interest in travel literature, road novels, road movies, mobility studies, infrastructure research, and work and living in literature. Her doctoral project, ongoing since 2020, examines 'The localization of modern mobility using the example of the imagination of the gas station in contemporary French literature.' She has received a research grant from the Institut franco-alemand de sciences historiques et sociales (IFRA-SHS)/Institut francais Frankfurt to support this work.
Her recent publications reveal a consistent focus on mobility and infrastructure in contemporary literature, particularly examining how transportation systems, roads, and vehicles shape literary narratives and cultural understanding. Her work spans French, Spanish, and German literary traditions, with particular attention to how movement and stasis reflect broader social and political conditions.
Melanie Schneider has received research funding through a grant from the Institut franco-alemand de sciences historiques et sociales (IFRA-SHS)/Institut francais Frankfurt to support her doctoral work on gas stations in contemporary French literature.
She teaches various seminars on French literature, including courses on urban observations in the works of George Perec and Thomas Clerc, love stories from Racine to Marivaux, Ionesco's theatre, Proust's 'Un amour de Swann,' work motifs in contemporary French literature, and walking in literature. Her teaching demonstrates her commitment to exploring the intersections of mobility, space, and narrative across different historical periods of French literary production.
Melanie Schneider collaborates with scholars across Europe on edited volumes and special journal issues focused on mobility, infrastructure, and contemporary literature.
