Dr. Stefanos Ioannou is a Senior Lecturer in Economics and Deputy Research Lead in Accounting, Economics, and Finance at Oxford Brookes Business School. He holds a PhD in Economics from the University of Leeds (2016), with prior studies at Newcastle University and the University of Athens. His research focuses on international macroeconomics, finance, and economic geography, with notable contributions to understanding financial geography, global financial networks, and regional development. He co-authored the Atlas of Finance (Yale University Press, 2024) and serves as co-editor of the Global Network on Financial Geography (FinGeo) working paper series.
Ioannou’s teaching includes modules on finance and development, international trade, and international labor markets. He has supervised undergraduate and postgraduate dissertations and previously worked on the interdisciplinary 'Cities in Global Financial Networks' project at the University of Oxford. His research has been funded by grants such as the British Academy’s £9,135 project on small business lending in Scottish islands (2023–2025).
His publications span peer-reviewed journals like Economic Geography, Journal of Post Keynesian Economics, and Urban Studies, addressing topics such as FinTech limitations, Brexit impacts on London’s financial power, and credit rating agencies’ roles in global economic dynamics. His work bridges theoretical and applied economics, emphasizing spatial analysis and institutional contexts.
