Stefano Leonardi is a Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at The University of Texas at Dallas, part of the Erik Jonsson School of Engineering and Computer Science. He holds a PhD in Theoretical and Applied Mechanics and an MS in Aerospace Engineering from Sapienza University of Rome. His research focuses on turbulence, computational fluid dynamics, wind energy systems, drag reduction mechanisms, superhydrophobic surfaces, and heat transfer phenomena.
He has published extensively on topics including large eddy simulation (LES) of wind turbines, wake dynamics, aeroelastic interactions, and liquid-infused surface engineering. His work has been highlighted in NSF Science Highlights and he has received multiple accolades including the Distinguished Researcher Award (2011-2012) and Best Professor Award (2011) from the University of Puerto Rico at Mayaguez.
Leonardi’s research group develops advanced numerical models for wind farm optimization, wildfire propagation, and fluid-structure interaction. He has pioneered methods for stochastic dynamical wake modeling and real-time control algorithms for turbine clusters. His studies on superhydrophobic surfaces explore heat transfer enhancement in both laminar and turbulent flows.
- Key Contributions: LES-based wind turbine noise prediction, DMD analysis of wake vortices, offshore wind-turbine ocean interaction modeling.
- Labs/Teams: Wind Energy and Turbulence Research Group at UTD, collaborating with NREL and NSF-funded initiatives.
