Stefano D'Amico is a Professor in the Department of History at Texas Tech University, where he has been teaching since 1999 after previously teaching at the University of Colorado at Boulder. His academic focus centers on early modern European history with particular expertise in Italian socio-economic and urban history.
Dr. D'Amico specializes in the social and economic transformations of early modern Italy, particularly Milan during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. His research examines urban development, economic structures, social stratification, and the impact of political changes during the Spanish rule of Milan. He also teaches a popular course on the history of the Italian Mafia.
His scholarly work reveals significant trends in Milanese society, showing how the city transitioned from an industrial to a commercial center while maintaining resilience through informal networks connecting Milan with Madrid and the Holy See. His publications span journals like Social History, The Sixteenth Century Journal, and The Journal of Family History, focusing on themes of urban economy, social mobility, and gender dynamics.
Dr. D'Amico has published two major monographs: Le contrade e la città: Sistema produttivo e spazio urbano a Milano fra Cinque e Seicento (1994) and Spanish Milan. A City within the Empire, 1535-1706 (2012). He is currently working on a third book titled The Widow, the Prostitute and the Nun: Women and Survival Strategies in Counter-Reformation Milan.
His academic journey began with a Ph.D. from the University of Milan, and his teaching career has spanned multiple institutions including the University of Colorado at Boulder before his long tenure at Texas Tech University.
