Marco Gargiulo is a Professor of Italian Linguistics at the Department of Foreign Languages, University of Bergen. His research focuses on sociolinguistics, dialectology, and the intersection of language with cinema, urban spaces, and identity. He has presented at international conferences such as the Workshop Two: 'Making Places' in Rome and the XI Congresso degli Italianisti Scandinavi in Falun, discussing topics like urban dialects, neorealist film dialogue, and language policy in Sardinia.
Key research interests include the representation of sociolinguistic spaces in cinema, multilingualism in Italian cinema, and the sociopolitical dimensions of language use in urban contexts. He has organized academic events, such as the 2016 conference Spazio urbano, plurilinguismo e rappresentazione cinematographica at the University of Bergen. His publications explore themes like lingua italiana e cinema, dialectal urbanism in Sardinia, and the interplay between language policy and cultural identity.
Recent work includes a 2023 review of Fabio Rossi’s book on Italian language and cinema, as well as lectures on Lina Wertmuller’s films. His contributions highlight the role of cinematic representation in shaping linguistic and cultural understanding, particularly in marginalized or multilingual contexts.
