Prof. Dr. Stefano Bernasconi serves as Adjunct Professor of Biogeochemistry at the Geological Institute, Department of Earth Sciences, ETH Zurich since 2009. His research focuses on biogeochemical processes in terrestrial and marine systems, with strong interdisciplinary collaboration across geological and biological sciences.
His academic background includes:
- Studied Geology and Petrography at ETH Zurich
- Received doctorate from ETH Zurich (1991)
Professor Bernasconi's research emphasizes developing innovative measurement techniques for geoscientific problems. He leads interdisciplinary projects involving environmental scientists, microbiologists, ecologists, and soil scientists, with particular focus on Climate Geology. His work bridges geological evidence with biological processes to understand Earth's systems.
Professional honors:
- Silver Medal from ETH Zurich for doctoral thesis (1991)
As laboratory director, he has significantly expanded the Stable Isotope Laboratory into a dual facility incorporating Organic Geochemistry. His international research engagement includes participation in the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) and numerous global collaborations, including a visiting professorship at the University of Strasbourg (2000).
His research group focuses on Climate Geology, integrating geological evidence with climate system analysis through interdisciplinary teamwork across multiple scientific domains.
