Dr. Stefanie Zaklan Duff serves as a Professor in the Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture at Vancouver Island University's Faculty of Science and Technology, teaching core courses including Marine Ecology (FISH 322), BC Aquatic Ecosystems (FISH 207), and Invertebrate Zoology (FISH 205).
Her academic credentials include:
- PhD in Evolution and Systematics, Department of Biological Sciences, University of Alberta (2001)
- MSc in Behavioural Ecology, Biological Sciences, Simon Fraser University (1994)
- BSc in Biology, Simon Fraser University (1990)
Her research integrates marine ecology, crustacean systematics, and aquaculture, with field and laboratory investigations spanning king crab evolution, asymmetry in decapods, and benthic invertebrate behavior. Early work focused on lithodid phylogenetics and morphological anomalies, later expanding to clam burial ecology and aquaculture applications.
Publications demonstrate strong interdisciplinary connections between fisheries science, evolutionary biology, and marine conservation. Key contributions include comprehensive reviews of cold-water crab biology and pioneering studies on the hermit-to-king crab transition, directly informing fisheries management practices in northern regions.
