Professor Douglas Neil is an Honorary Senior Research Fellow at the School of Cardiovascular & Metabolic Health, University of Glasgow. His research focuses on crustacean biology, parasitology, and post-harvest seafood processing. He has collaborated extensively on studies involving Norway lobsters (Nephrops norvegicus), edible crabs (Cancer pagurus), and other decapod species.
Key research areas include: crustacean welfare (electrical stunning protocols), parasitic infections (Hematodinium sp.), sustainable aquaculture practices, and seafood quality preservation. He has authored/co-authored over 60 peer-reviewed publications and led multiple industry-funded projects on topics like modified atmosphere packaging and anti-melanotic product efficacy.
Notable contributions include pioneering work on humane slaughter methods for crustaceans and long-term studies of Hematodinium infections in Scottish fisheries. His work bridges marine biology, food science, and animal welfare to address challenges in global seafood production and sustainability.
Neil has collaborated with organizations such as Xyrex Ltd and the Scottish Nephrops Survey, producing technical reports on fishery bycatch reduction, RAS aquaculture systems, and husbandry practices for horseshoe crabs.
