Prof. Dr. Stefanie Hürtgen is Chair of the Division of Human Geography at the Paris Lodron University of Salzburg, within the Department of Sociology and Human Geography under the Faculty of Digital and Analytical Sciences. Her research focuses on labour geography, critical political economy, and glocal capitalist spatial production, analyzing how transnational labor regimes and special economic zones shape migration, class conflict, and ecological reproduction.
- Key themes: Authoritarian digitalization, fragmented labor processes, neoliberal externalization
- Regional expertise: Jordanian special economic zones, European integration, Middle East political economy
Her recent publications (2020-2025) reveal trends in glocal class struggles, refugee labor integration, and critical feminist political ecology. She has contributed to debates on Maria Mies’ Third Worldization and Oskar Negt’s critical theory.
As a leading voice in Labour Geography, her work bridges Marxist geography with postcolonial critique, addressing socio-spatial fragmentation and subjective agency under neoliberalism.
