Dr. Stefania Nicoli is an Associate Professor at Yale University with joint appointments in the Departments of Internal Medicine (Cardiovascular Medicine) and Genetics. She serves as Director of the Yale Zebrafish Phenotyping Core for Precision Medicine and Co-Director of the Yale Cardiovascular Research Center (YCVRC), where she leads cutting-edge research on vascular development and function.
Dr. Nicoli earned her Bachelor's degree in Pharmaceutical Biotechnology from the University of Milan in 2002 and her PhD in Biomedical Biotechnology from the University of Brescia in 2007. She completed postdoctoral training at the University of Massachusetts Medical School in 2011 before joining Yale School of Medicine in 2012, where she has established herself as a leading researcher in vascular biology and non-coding RNA.
Her research focuses on decoding the in vivo functions of microRNAs in cell biology and development, utilizing zebrafish models to investigate how non-coding RNAs regulate gene expression and influence blood vessel formation and function. This work has significant implications for understanding diseases including cancer, atherosclerosis, and stroke. Her laboratory's innovative approaches have positioned zebrafish as a powerful model for studying vascular development, with applications in precision medicine.
Dr. Nicoli's recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on vascular development mechanisms, with particular emphasis on artery-vein differentiation, hemodynamic regulation of vascular development, and the role of non-coding RNAs in cardiovascular biology. Her work spans multiple disciplines including developmental biology, molecular genetics, and translational cardiovascular medicine.
