Dr. Stefan Wheelock is Associate Professor of English at George Mason University, specializing in African-British and African-American literatures of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. His research examines how Black antislavery writings shaped Atlantic political discourse. He earned his PhD from Brown University in 2001.
Research focuses on slave narratives, early Black polemical writing, and their contributions to transatlantic intellectual traditions. His acclaimed book 'Barbaric Culture and Black Critique' analyzes how Black writers exposed contradictions in Enlightenment thought through religious and political critique of slavery.
Publications appear in the Cambridge History of African American Literature and other major collections. Recent work investigates historical consciousness in early Black biography and the relationship between African-American studies and modernity. Current book project 'Promises Lynched' examines racial terror, religion, and American identity formation.
