Stefan Schwarz

Professor Stefan Schwarz serves as Head of the FAO Reference Center for Antimicrobial Resistance and Managing Director at the Institute of Microbiology and Animal Diseases within the Department of Veterinary Medicine at Free University of Berlin.

His research focuses on antimicrobial resistance in veterinary contexts, with particular emphasis on bacterial pathogens affecting animal health and food safety. As a Highly Cited Researcher (2021), his work has significant global impact in understanding resistance mechanisms and transmission pathways between animals and humans.

Professor Schwarz leads the Veterinary Centre for Resistance Research (TZR), which had its ceremonial opening in April 2022. His laboratory maintains active research programs in veterinary microbiology with connections to international food safety standards.
