Elke Genersch serves as an Associate Professor within the Department of Veterinary Medicine at Humboldt University of Berlin, specifically affiliated with the Center for Infectious Diseases and the Institute of Microbiology and Animal Diseases. She maintains a primary operational base at the State Institute for Apiculture in Hohen Neuendorf, where her office coordinates national apicultural research efforts.
Her research centers on honeybee health, investigating viral and bacterial pathogens through veterinary microbiology frameworks. She examines colony collapse mechanisms and develops disease mitigation strategies for apiaries, directly supporting Germany's beekeeping industry and pollinator conservation initiatives. This work bridges laboratory pathogen analysis with field-applied apicultural solutions.
Prof. Genersch actively mentors doctoral candidates, recently supervising Henrike Krüger-Haker (awarded Ernst Reuter Prize and summa cum laude distinction in December 2023) and Laura Zelenka (summa cum laude completion in March 2024), reflecting her commitment to training next-generation apiary scientists.
Her leadership at the State Institute for Apiculture integrates academic research with practical beekeeper support services, including diagnostic testing and outbreak response for regional apiaries. This dual university-institute role positions her at the nexus of veterinary science and sustainable apiculture policy development.
