Stefan Schmidl

Stefan Schmidl is a Professor of History and Theory at the Music and Arts Private University of the City of Vienna (MUK), where he has been a lecturer since 2009. He also serves as deputy director of the Center for Science and Research (ZfR) since 2015 and head of the Competence Center for Film | Film Music (ZfR) since 2022. Additionally, he leads the Audiovisual Media department at the Austrian Centre for Digital Humanities and Cultural Heritage of the Austrian Academy of Sciences.

His research focuses on film music, historical-critical editions of film scores, audiovisual representation in postwar Austrian cinema, and the cultural identity-forming function of Viennese operetta. He has led multiple third-party funded projects, including analyses of works by Johannes Fehring and Franz Grothe, and studies on Austrian-German melodrama.
