Dr. Stefan Michel is a Senior Lecturer in Church History at the Institute for Protestant Theology at the Technical University of Dresden. He previously served as a Private Lecturer (equivalent to Senior Lecturer) at the Institute for Church History at the University of Leipzig until September 30, 2024, and was Head of the Academy Project "Letters and Documents on the Church Politics of Frederick the Wise and John the Steadfast 1513 to 1532: Reformation in the Context of Early Modern State Formation" at the Saxon Academy of Sciences in Leipzig from May 2014 to July 2021.

His research focuses on interdisciplinary intersections of Reformation history, Baroque piety, Rationalist theology, Church and art, and Biblical interpretation history. His work bridges historical theology with cultural studies of early modern state formation, particularly in projects like analyzing Reformation-era political-theological correspondence.
Notable projects include leading the Saxon Academy's critical edition of Martin Luther's writings, which informed his habilitation. He has taught seminars on Reformation and early modern Lutheranism at both universities, and his publications address historical canonization processes and theological methodologies.
