Stefan Messingschlager is a Research Associate and lecturer at the Chair of Modern and Contemporary History within the Department of History at Helmut Schmidt University/University of the Federal Armed Forces Hamburg. His academic career bridges German and Chinese historical scholarship with significant contributions to understanding Sino-German relations.
His research interests span five interconnected domains: (1) Expertise in History and Present/Western China Expertise; (2) Sino-Western Relations since 1949, with special focus on Sino-German Relations; (3) Contemporary Chinese History and Politics since the 1970s; (4) International Politics, Security Affairs & Global Governance; and (5) History of Knowledge, Intellectual History and Global History of Ideas. His work demonstrates how knowledge production about China has evolved in Western contexts and how this expertise shapes geopolitical understanding.

His dissertation examines China Expertise in the Federal Republic of Germany from the 1960s to the 1980s, analyzing how journalists, scholars, business professionals, and diplomats formed an epistemic community that shaped understanding of the 'Black Box China'.
