Stefan Mayr

Stefan Mayr is an Associate Professor of EU Law and International Law at the Vienna University of Economics and Business (WU), where he also serves as deputy head of the Institute for Law and Governance. He holds a doctorate in law from WU, an LL.M. from Central European University in Budapest, and a Magister Juris from Johannes Kepler University in Linz. In 2024, he was awarded the venia docendi for EU Law and International Law following his habilitation on conflicts between EU law and international investment arbitration.

His research examines:

• Interactions between EU law and international legal frameworks
• Multilevel governance challenges in trade and investment regimes
• Constitutional dimensions of EU external relations
• Fundamental rights implications in transnational disputes

His publications primarily focus on reforming investment arbitration frameworks, with recent work analyzing the Energy Charter Treaty termination mechanisms, economic security instruments, and sustainability conflicts in EU external policies.

He maintains active research collaborations with institutions including the Max Planck Institute for Comparative Public Law and International Law (Heidelberg) and PluriCourts Centre (University of Oslo).
