Professor Stefan Marciniak is Professor of Respiratory Science at the University of Cambridge, Director of the Cambridge MB/PhD Programme, and a Principal Investigator at the Cambridge Institute for Medical Research (CIMR). He serves as an Honorary Consultant Respiratory Physician at both Addenbrooke's and Royal Papworth Hospitals, bridging clinical practice with fundamental research in respiratory medicine.
Professor Marciniak studied medicine at the University of Cambridge as part of its MB/PhD Programme. Following medical posts in Cambridge, London, and Edinburgh, he undertook post-doctoral training in New York funded by the Wellcome Trust. He returned to Cambridge as an MRC Clinician Scientist Fellow before establishing his own research group in CIMR as an MRC Senior Clinical Research Fellow in 2012.
His research focuses on cellular stress responses in lung disease, particularly examining how protein folding defects trigger cellular stress pathways that contribute to pathology. His laboratory investigates the role of endoplasmic reticulum stress, the unfolded protein response, and the integrated stress response in various lung conditions including alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency, mesothelioma, pulmonary hypertension, and pulmonary fibrosis. His work spans from fundamental cell biology to clinical applications, with a strong translational focus connecting molecular mechanisms to patient care.
Professor Marciniak has received numerous honors including Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians (2011), and serves in leadership roles including Director of the NHS England Rare Disease Collaborative Network in Familial Pneumothorax and Chair of Mesothelioma UK's Research and Audit Scientific Committee.
As Director of the Cambridge MB/PhD Programme, Professor Marciniak oversees one of the UK's premier physician-scientist training programs. His research group at CIMR receives funding from the Medical Research Council (MRC), Asthma + Lung UK, Alpha1-Foundation, June Hancock Mesothelioma Research Fund, and LifeArc, supporting investigations into the molecular mechanisms of lung disease.
Based at the Cambridge Institute for Medical Research on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus, Professor Marciniak leads a multidisciplinary team investigating cellular stress pathways in lung disease. His laboratory works closely with clinicians at Addenbrooke's and Papworth hospitals, facilitating rapid translation of basic research findings into clinical applications for patients with respiratory conditions.
