Stefan König

Prof. Dr. Stefan König is a Professor of Sports Science with a focus on Empirical Sports Pedagogy at the Pedagogical University of Weingarten since 2006. He also holds the Goethe Teaching Professor position at Goethe University Frankfurt since 2025. His leadership roles include directing the Interdisciplinary Research Center for Subject-Related Teaching and Learning Processes (ZeLL) at PH Weingarten since 2008.

• Education: Promoted to Dr. rer. soc. (Doctor of Social Sciences) in 1991; certified teacher in Sports and English (1984); additional qualification in Psychological Counseling (1991-1992).

His research emphasizes quasi-experimental studies on motor skill development, evaluation of school sports concepts, and mixed methods research in sports science. He has pioneered work in handball training methodologies, bilateral training effects, and student-centered sports education.

König’s recent publications and books address cognitive athletic training in handball, bilateral training programs, and inclusion in school sports. He has served on editorial boards for journals like the International Journal of Multiple Research Approaches and Zeitschrift für Sportpädagogische Forschung, and as a reviewer for over 20 international journals and grant programs.

König has supervised 11 doctoral students as primary advisor and co-supervised others, with a requirement for master’s thesis students to attend his Empirisch Forschen in der Sportwissenschaft seminar. His work bridges academic research and practical school sports implementation.
